Ayat-e-Noor Ki Tafseer in Urdu & English (Surah An-Noor 24:35–38) — Parable of Light Explained
Verse 35 of Surah An-Noor (آيَةُ النُّورِ — "Allahu Noorus-samawati wal-ard...") is one of the most awe-inspiring passages in the Noble Qur'an. Following the social laws of purity, modesty, and guarding the gaze earlier in Surah An-Noor, Allah reveals how Divine Light illuminates the universe and shines inside the pure heart of a believer. Through five vivid symbols—the Niche (Mishkat), the Lamp (Misbah), the Crystal Glass (Zujajah), the Pearly Star (Kawkabun Durriyy), and the Blessed Olive Tree (Shajarah Mubarakah Zaytunah)—this verse paints an unforgettable portrait of faith, followed immediately in verses 36–38 by the practical places where this Light is found: the Houses of Allah (Masajid) and the hearts of believers whose trade never distracts them from Dhikr and Salah.

What Does "Allahu Noorus-Samawati Wal-Ard" Mean?
Abdullah ibn Abbas (RA) explained: "Allahu Noorus-samawati wal-ard means: Allah is the Guide (Hadi) of the inhabitants of the heavens and the earth, and the Illuminator (Munawwir) who illuminates the cosmos with physical light (sun, moon, stars) and illuminates hearts with spiritual light (faith and revelation)." And in Sahih Muslim (179), the Prophet ﷺ said: "His Veil is Light (Hijabuhu an-Noor)."
The 5 Symbols of the Parable According to Ubayy ibn Ka'b & Ibn Abbas (RA)
صحابہ کرامؓ کے نزدیک تمثیلِ نور کے ۵ استعارات (مشکوٰۃ، زجاجہ، مصباح، شجرہ مبارکہ، زیت)In Tafseer Al-Tabari and Tafseer Ibn Kathir, Ubayy ibn Ka'b (RA) and Ibn Abbas (RA) explain that "Mathalu Noorihi" refers to the parable of Allah's Light in the heart of a believer: (1) Al-Mishkat (the niche) is the believer's chest; (2) Az-Zujajah (the crystal glass) is the believer's pure heart; (3) Al-Misbah (the lamp/flame) is the Qur'an and Iman inside it; (4) Ash-Shajarah Al-Mubarakah (the blessed olive tree) is pure Fitrah and Sincerity; and (5) "Noorun 'ala Noor" is the light of Divine Revelation meeting the light of pure Fitrah.
